  • My Pride on Remembrance Day

I wrote about Remembrance Day last year. Specifically, I wrote about the fact that I don’t believe that decorating for Christmas before Remembrance Day has anything to do with disrespecting veterans, or anyone currently serving in the military. The real problem is that we so easily gloss over the day. We forget. We don’t take

  • On sexual assault

I want to talk to you about sexual assault, but I don’t want to. I don’t want to throw around words like “trigger” and “victim” and “victim-shaming”. I don’t even feel like I have any right to talk about it. Except that’s part of the problem. I have every right to speak about these things.

  • Why do celebrities get plastic surgery?

(this piece appeared in its original form on AMotherWorld.com in 2012) Oh, hello Lara Flynn Boyle, I didn’t recognize you and your new face. You ask why she has done this to herself, but come on, you know why. Why do celebrities repeatedly undergo procedures that eventually destroy the faces we once idolized? Why do celebs get plastic

  • The Small Joys

I’m pleased to present you with the very first (other than my own) submission for the #BlogSmallJoys series. Submitted by Jane Palmer, a friend I’ve had for more than a decade yet never met in person. I’m so honoured she sent this in. Enjoy! I’m sitting here, slightly squiffy, drinking Pimm’s No. 1 Cup (colloquially

  • Dear Mama of The Crying Child

When my son was just three years old, I walked him to kindergarten. I was ready for him to go, and I know he was ready, too. He had grown so much and wanted new friends and experiences so badly. He talked about how excited he was to go to school, and how much he

I don’t know about you, but leisurely breakfasts don’t exactly fit into my morning routine. With the kids heading back to school soon, I’m already planning quick and healthy breakfasts and easy ways to pack lunches. One of my kids’ favourite breakfasts is French toast, and this one’s so easy, and so packed with

  • About that road to hell…

I got up this morning with a list of things to do. Not the least of which was, “Don’t let the kids play Minecraft all freaking day”. (If you’re wondering where my kids are, they’ve been playing Minecraft all freaking day.) I managed to get a couple things checked off my list, but then, poof!

  • Some Stuff I Just Don’t Get Vol. 2

Remember that post I wrote about stuff I just don’t get? As it happens, there’s a lot more stuff I just don’t get. This round is all about baby gear. Honestly, why are there so many gizmos and gadgets and crap marketed to parents under the guise of being totally needed when they’re really just

  • Newfoundland in the Summer

Where the air is salty and fresh, and rocky land meets the vast sea. Where old stories pass from one to another, and history is rich with adventure and wonder. Where food is hearty and homes are welcoming. Where our hearts are happy and time is always too short. Newfoundland.

  • Quinoa your kids will eat

We eat a lot of quinoa here, but none of the recipes are my kids’ favourite. I absolutely love the stuff, and last night I made a Greek salad-inspired quinoa dish (with black olives, red and yellow peppers, and feta, with a dijon vinegar dressing) but it was so not a hit with the kids.
