Providing Smiles to Sick Children: Starlight Foundation’s 1st Annual Tea & Tiaras
If you’re a parent like me, you probably know the worry you feel when your child is sick. It doesn’t matter if it’s a mild fever, a strange rash, or something more serious — we worry. That’s what we do. When Mason was just an infant, he was hospitalized for bronchiolitis. I had never even heard of that before — an infection in the lungs similar to pneumonia. He was hooked up to machines to measure his oxygen levels, and on a mask, and I stayed with him 24 hours a day for more than a week. I’ll never forget the sounds those machines made constantly, and even worse, the sounds they made when his oxygen levels dropped.
Having an ill child is so scary, and I’m beyond thankful that our stay in the hospital was so brief, despite it feeling endless at the time. I feel thankful every day for my kids’ health, especially having seen so many of our friends deal with so many other illnesses in their children. Having a seriously ill child is life-altering, and it’s so difficult for families to set aside the illness long enough to embrace the childhood behind the struggle sometimes. It’s hard to find carefree, joyous fun when a child is sick.
This is where Starlight Foundation comes in to help.
For more than 25 years, Starlight Foundation has been transforming the lives of seriously ill children and their families by bringing them joy when happiness is often hardest to find. For hospitalized kids, they provide entertainment, distraction and relief. There are Starlight Kits and Fun Centers™, Fun Rooms and Parties — all bright moments in the lives of kids who are suffering with severe illnesses. And for those who are out of the hospital, Starlight children can benefit from the foundation’s “Escapes” and “Wishes” programs. They do such incredible work to bring smiles to those sweet little faces, and I’m happy to share with you another of their wonderful campaigns.
Tea & Tiaras is a Starlight Foundation fund- and awareness-raising event taking place on Sunday, November 2nd, 2014 at the Royal York Hotel Ballroom in Toronto. Join Executive Chef Collin Thornton as you enjoy a decadent High Tea experience filled with gourmet treats and delicious teas.
