Great Big Sea
I’ve been to a lot of concerts in my day. I’ve been in refined audiences who sat stoically absorbing the musical experience, and I’ve been in the mud-drenched midst of writhing mosh pits screaming and loving every moment. There’s fun to be had wherever live music happens, as far as I’m concerned.
Last night, my friend and I went to see Great Big Sea, which happens to be one of my most favourite bands ever, and one I’ve seen a number of times. I absolutely love their shows — the audience is fun, friendly, and really, really into the music. It’s just the best experience. I mean, Blister in the Sun done by Great Big Sea? That’s fun.
It’s been 20 years for Great Big Sea and this is the final tour for one of their founding members, Sean McCann, so I was pretty excited to go, which you can probably tell by my smile here (I’m the one on the right):
Although we had 7th row tickets, we stood in front of the stage for the entire show, dancing and singing with the other awesome GBS fans. They’re a fun bunch of people, by the way. If you ever get a chance to dance with them, do it. Even better, if you ever have the chance to see them on home soil (Newfoundland), omg MAKE SURE YOU GO. There is nothing like a GBS concert at home.
I also had the pleasure (and by pleasure I mean completely vile experience) of being mounted from behind by a woman who decided she would climb the stage with the support of her husband, and rested her bodyweight on my back almost the entire night, despite me asking her politely (and then, not so politely) to stop it.
Her husband apparently enjoyed standing crotch-to-my-back, and rubbing my sides while he groped his partner. In addition, after I told them to stop touching me for the last time, he shoved me pretty hard and then called me a “f&*#ing bitch” for asking them to stop encroaching on my personal space, and continued to insult me, which was pretty spectacular. I haven’t been that disgusted in a person’s behaviour in a really long time, and I wish I’d gone and gotten security.
But otherwise? Amazing concert, and I’m so, so thankful my friend invited me. Now, when’s the next Great Big Sea concert?
