Small Joys, by Brandy

Today’s #BlogSmallJoys submission is by my talented, kind, wonderful friend Brandy Reid. I met Brandy online, but have since met her in person, too, and I can tell you that she’s one of the sweetest and most humble people I’ve ever met. Brandy is a stay at home mom to two very active and hockey-obsessed boys. As a former YA librarian, Brandy loves to read and is obsessed with reading everyday whether it be books or blogs. Brandy proudly admits that she is a wee bit addicted to social media, especially Twitter. She also believes that everything in life can related to the iconic TV show Friends. No day is complete without chocolate. You can find Brandy sharing her thoughts over at, on Facebook, and on Twitter.

When Alex asked me to write for her new blog series #BlogSmallJoys I was honoured. I admire Alex and her writing ability. She definitely has a way with words.

While thinking about what to write for this post I was reminded of when I participated in Project Happy back in 2012.

My #BlogSmallJoys post will be similar to the Project Happy posts I wrote back then.

I can find many small joys in every moment of each day. Sometimes life can get so chaotic that we are not able to truly enjoy the moment for what it is. Reflecting back on these special little snippets of time always put a smile on my face.

… For our annual summer vacation we travelled to Calgary and Edmonton. The boys had an awesome time at Calaway park where we spent the day with my childhood friend and her lovely family. We also learned a lot while browsing the Telus Spark Science Centre in Calgary. In Edmonton we spent an entire day at West Edmonton Mall’s World Waterpark. Seeing the boy’s faces in the wave pool was priceless. Big Boy even convinced me to go on a few slides I would never have attempted in my life (and hadn’t when I had been before as a kid). It was great to see him enjoying himself and being so brave. So, I can now say that I survived Nessie’s Revenge and Tropical Typhoon. We also had a chance to visit my aunt, uncle, cousin and her fiance while in Edmonton.

… Thankful that we are able to take our family on vacations, no matter how big or small they may be.

… Little Man loves to sing and he enjoys music as much as I do. In the car when one of his favourite songs comes on he asks me to turn it up and we both sing along at the top of our lungs.

… Big Boy made the B team in the Atom league for rep hockey.

… This is a vague-blogging moment but I want to send out a special thank you to someone who pulled an awesome random act of kindness on me and I will never be able to thank this person enough for believing in me.

… Seeing my best friend from my university days and meeting her third child, a three year old boy, for the first time. It had been too long.

… Having the support of friends of family behind me when I really need it.

… Taking my Little Man to his first day of Kindergarten. He is growing so quickly. I cannot believe my baby is now in school full-time (but only half days).

… Watching Big Boy totally in his element playing hockey. The other night he scored five goals during his game.

… Love that my writing inspiration is finally returning. I hope the flood continues and that my drive to write sticks.

… Going to Tim Horton’s when out of town. I wish we had one here.

… Listening to music late at night (or for eight hours during a long road trip) and singing my heart away.

… After returning to Winnipeg from the Blissdom conference I spent one day shopping. I was at the till waiting to pay for my kid’s new snow suits and talking to my friend from university when a lovely lady came over and gave me a $20 coupon to use with my purchase. It was a pleasant surprise. In the end I could not use it because it was only for online purchases but it was the thought that counts!

… We met with both of the boy’s teachers on Parent-Teacher night and they both teachers said that†the boys are doing great in their classrooms. We learned that Big Boy is an awesome helper in his class and that Little Man really enjoys playing with his new classmates.

Being able to attend Blissdom for a second time. I had a wonderful time with my roomies and I loved seeing all of my online peeps. My blogging friends are my people. They get me. It is truly a great community to be a part of.

… Ordering room service and enjoying the delicious food in silence.

… Pumpkin pie and pumpkin cheesecake, enough said.

… Finishing a good book.

… Having a hotel room and comfy bed all to myself.

… Attending my cousin’s wedding in August and spending time with family we do not get to see very often.

… I bought a new vehicle in July and my credit score was so high that the finance manager was shocked. He had said he had never seen a score that high before. Thank you Dad for teaching me to pay all of my bills on time and in full (when I am able to).

… Being able to see my brother twice this year. I really miss him and wished he lived closer.

… Dancing the night away at the Blissdom PJ party. I even broke out the running man and my favourite rap dance. OK, I really only have two moves. But they are good ones and I had a blast.

… Spending time with my friends whenever I can (which is not often enough). This morning I was invited over to enjoy a London Fog at a friend’s and we had a great time chatting away.

… When Little Man twirls my hair in his fingers. He has done this practically since the day he was born. I envied a friend of mine whose baby did the same and was so glad when Little started doing it too. He even twirls his own hair. (And then it looks like he has a mohawk afterwards.)

… Watching Big Boy engrossed in a book. I hope his love of reading stays with him for his entire lifetime.

… Spoiled myself a wee bit and bought some new clothes while away on my trip.

… Was shocked and amazed one day when I realized my new Hyundai Santa Fe has a heated steering wheel. At first I had no idea what was going on.

… Going to my parents for Thanksgiving. They invited two other couples to celebrate the evening with us and we had an awesome time eating (I ate for one of the first times in a very long time, which is a very big deal) and playing games.

… Taking my boys out for a movie night date. Although I was booted out of my seat by one of their friends so I did not even get to sit with them.

Now, what are your small joys?

  1. This is a really sweet post and of course your links all sent me wandering back through your blog… good times. 😀

It’s so simple to find the small joys in life, once we take a minute to stop and take it all in.

You’ve shared so much! Great post.
