I’m still at the stage where my kids need me for almost everything, but it hit me the other day that in a blink, they could be heading off to college or university, leaving this mama with an empty nest. Time flies.
The good news is that I’ll always be their (somewhat meddlesome) mama, so obviously, I’ll never stop planning and preparing them for life outside our home. That includes teaching them about life skills, and all the cringiest topics I can muster. 😉
If your kids are leaving the nest this September, here are some practical tips to share with them:
Lesson #1: Safety First!
Omg, you guys, one day our children will have sex with other peoples’ kids, and there mere thought of it makes me want to hide under my own covers forever. Instead, I force myself to have open, informative, age-appropriate conversations about sex even at my kids’ young ages.
It’s important to talk about safe sex, as blech as it may make us feel, because the reality is, one study found that almost two-thirds (64 per cent) of post-secondary students across the country had a sexual encounter within the past year and 72 per cent of students engaged in intercourse during their last sexual encounter, yet only about half (51 per cent) reported using a condom. OMG. Parents, talk to your children about the importance of safe sex. Whether you talk about it or not, chances are, they’re doing it, so why not give them the best protection of all: knowledge. And condoms. If you have a child heading off to school, buy condoms for them and pack them in their suitcase. Trojan™ condoms are the number one condom choice of Canadians for protection.
Lesson #2: Clean Clothes Matter
I get it, stain removers, sorting and scooping are not for students… they’re looking for convenience and ease (and hey, I am, too!), so Arm & Hammer™ Plus OxiClean™ 3-In-1 Power Paks are dreamy. They’re the all-in-one detergent you’ve been searching for, and hopefully it’ll mean they’re not packin’ a month’s worth of laundry every time they come home to “visit”.
(And hey, make it even easier on them by sharing this laundry care guide with them! Not gonna lie, I didn’t know most of those…)
Lesson 3: Sometimes, kids know best!
I know, I know, we’re supposed to know it all, but sometimes our kids are gonna teach us some pretty cool stuff. Like beauty hacks and short cuts — like using Batiste Dry Shampoo to facilitate sleeping in and skipping the shower. Not that I’ve ever done that, of course. Ahem.
Batiste is the world’s #1 dry shampoo* for a reason: it instantly refreshes your hair between washes, no water required. It works by absorbing excess oil from the roots leaving hair looking clean and fresh. So, whether you’re running late or just looking for an instant refresh, new Batiste Dry Shampoo Heavenly Volume is a saving grace as it has the additional benefit of transforming hair with gorgeous, touchable volume and bounce.
